Homeopathy treats the whole person, not just the symptoms. Homeopathy is based on the principle that "like cures like", meaning that to treat a certain disorder, a remedy is used that would produce the same symptoms in a healthy person. This law is known as the Law of Similars. Examples of this law follows below.
If you peel an onion, you usually cry and if you drink too much coffee, you usually don't sleep. Allium Cepa is a remedy that is made from onion and is used to treat conditions where there is excessive tearing from the eyes, during hay fever and colds. A remedy that is made from coffee (Coffea Tosta) may be given to a patient that suffers from sleeplessness or agitation.
The process utilized to prepare homeopathic medicines consists of dilutions and succussions. This is done for 2 reasons: a) The therapeutic effect of a substance is enhanced and b) The side-effects are eliminated. Remedies are given in small dosages to merely stimulate the body back to health.
Remedies can come in different potencies and are also available in Mother Tinctures. Common potencies are 6c, 12c, 30c and 200c. You can buy homeopathic remedies in the form of sugar-based tablets, pills, granules, liquids and powders that you take by mouth. You can also get some as creams or ointments to apply directly to your skin.
